Chelsea + Noddy | Lake Tarawera wedding

Chelsea visited Kenny and Harlow with an open mind and ended up loving the very first style she tried. Here she shares her advice for other brides-to-be and all the photos and details of her gorgeous day at Black Barn, Lake Tarawera.

Their Story

Can you tell us about your dress journey?

I am an indecisive person by nature and really had no idea what I was looking for when I started my dress journey. Previously I had been to one other dress fitting but nothing  felt quite right, so I went into Kenny and Harlow with an open mind. I was warmly welcomed, offered bubbles and started looking through the array of styles.. there were so many options which was great as I quickly got a good idea of what suited me. The dress I ended up going with was actually the first dress I tried on and I basically didn’t look back. Megan was amazing to deal with, she is so good at what she does and made sure I ended up with the perfect dress and fit.

What was your source of inspiration (for your dress)?

I really didn’t have any idea of what I wanted in a dress but I knew I wanted to keep it relatively simple, classic and a little bit glam.

Can you share your engagement story?

My partner and I were heading out to Piha for a bit of a date night, there had been a walk that we had been wanting to do for a while and we finally decided to tick it off and then have dinner out there. We reached the lookout and it was so beautiful and peaceful. We were just about to leave when my partner said “well actually the real reason we are here…” and got down on one knee. I was actually in so much shock that my legs started shaking and I had to sit down – I did not see it coming at all! He had a backpack with him which had a small bottle of champagne in it, so we drank that while we took it all in and then headed back to my partner’s parents house to celebrate with our families. It was perfect.

Where did you get married / what was special about your venue?

We got married at Black Barn in Lake Tarawera and absolutely loved it! It was the first venue we looked at and the minute we saw it, both strongly felt like it was the one. It’s name speaks for itself.. it’s a little black barn on the top of a hill that looks out to Lake Tarawera, the views are absolutely stunning and it has beautiful grounds. We also loved the idea of a destination wedding and given the place, we had all of our friends and family stay close to each other, it was so fun and we got to celebrate together all week.

What was your favourite part of the day?

Honestly it sounds a bit cliche but I seriously loved every second. You are surrounded by so much love that it’s very hard to not have the best day ever. My favourite part was probably when we snuck off to do sunset photos, as it was so nice to just have a breather together, take it all in and talk about our days just us two (and our awesome photographer and videographer). I also loved our speeches and of course the dance floor!

If you could give other brides-to-be one piece of advice, it would be…

I think my advice would be to not let anything phase you on the day, for me there were a few little things that didn’t go to plan but ultimately it didn’t make any difference to my day overall. If you can afford it, a wedding coordinator is an absolute game changer and really goes a long way with not having to stress about anything on the day. You’ve spent so much time planning, so as much as you can, relax, laugh and enjoy every second as it goes so fast.
